An undergraduate degree represents the first level of education attainable at the university level, commonly referred to as a baccalaureate or bachelor’s degree. It can be further categorized into honours or general degrees. An honours degree, typically spanning four years of full-time study, is characterized by its focused exploration of a specific discipline, such as Biochemistry or Classical Studies. Conversely, a general degree, typically completed in three years, offers a more generalized or broadly defined study area.
Professional degrees adhere to the accreditation standards set forth by specific professional associations or colleges. At the University of Guelph, professional degrees are available in Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Engineering (B.Eng.), Applied Human Nutrition (B.A.Sc.), and Landscape Architecture (BLA). Certain professional degrees, like the DVM program, necessitate the completion of prerequisite university study before application.
Associate diplomas represent intensive two-year programs offered at both the main and Ridgetown campuses. These programs provide students with focused, hands-on training in specialized fields such as Environmental Technician or Turfgrass Management.
Following completion of an undergraduate degree, students may pursue graduate studies to further specialize in a particular area of interest. Graduate degrees often involve advanced study, research, or the completion of a thesis.
Within an honours degree, a major constitutes the primary area of study, requiring intensive focus and coursework within a specific discipline. Examples include Environmental Engineering or Bio-Medical Science.
A minor offers students the opportunity to explore a secondary area of study that may be related to or distinct from their major. It provides foundational education in a single discipline and is typically selected after commencing university studies.
Credits serve as the unit of measurement for university courses, with one semester-long course typically equating to one half-credit (0.5), while full-year courses typically represent one full credit (1.0). The academic year is divided into three semesters: fall (September to December), winter (January to April), and summer (May to August).
