Yale, a private Ivy League research institution, may have its origins in an effort by colonial clergy to establish a local college in the 1640s. The Connecticut General Assembly granted a charter for the foundation of a Collegiate School in 1701. After receiving a sizable donation of books and materials from Welsh merchant Elihu Yale, the school was renamed Yale University. The fact that four Yale alums were willing to put their names to the Declaration of Independence demonstrates the university’s dedication to its declared mission of producing future leaders.

Yale College has a student-to-faculty ratio of 6:1, and 73.4% of its classes have fewer than 20 pupils. This affords educators with a great deal of leeway and facilitates substantial pupil-teacher engagement.
