The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is a top-tier private research institution. It is in the Pasadena area of Los Angeles County. What is now Throop University started out as a technical school in 1891. Today, Caltech is known all over the world for its groundbreaking research in engineering and the natural sciences. The academic organization of the university is made up of six divisions: physics, mathematics, and astronomy; chemistry and chemical engineering; humanities and social sciences; biology and biological engineering; geological and planetary sciences; engineering; and applied science. Caltech currently has more than 1,285 graduate students and about 948 undergraduate students enrolled in programs. About 3,900 faculty and staff work at Caltech. This includes both people who got their degrees there and people who did not. The teachers at this school know a lot about science and technology and have worked in those fields for a long time.
