Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg was established in 1457 and was initially housed in Freiburg Cathedral under the name “Albertina.” At its inception, the institution was designed to function as a comprehensive university and was equipped with four faculties: law, theology, medicine, and philosophy. Latin was the language of instruction at the university when it first opened its doors in order to educate future church leaders and administrators. At the moment, the university is comprised of 11 faculties and 18 research centers; these are the locations where teaching and study are carried out respectively. Accreditation was granted to the university’s programs by a number of prestigious organizations, including ASIIN, ACQUIN, AQAS, ZEVA, and EUR-ACE, among others. Additionally, it is a member of Eucor, which stands for The European Campus.

The university is spread out across the city of Freiburg and includes not just one but three significant campuses. The University Center, which is located close to the historic city Center, the Engineering Campus, and the Institute Quarter are the three campuses that make up the university. The Jugendstil Kollegiengebaude I, as well as the current and former university libraries, and the university church are all located within the University Centre. Within the institute quarter are the physics and chemistry buildings, the Institute for Macromolecular Chemistry, a few other science buildings, and the preclinical institutes that are associated with the Faculty of Medicine. The engineering campus is located to the northwest of the city center, close to the small Freiburg airfield. It is home to the Department of Computer Science as well as the Institut für Mikrosystemtechnik. The Medical Center at the University of Freiburg is one of the largest university medical centers in all of Germany, boasting a staff of approximately 11,500 people. Each year, healthcare is provided to more than 837,000 outpatients and more than 69,900 inpatients by approximately 1300 physicians and 2900 registered nurses.

Notably, the university provides education in more than 290 different areas of study and has more than 130 different master’s degree programs. It is possible to earn a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in subjects such as ancient civilization, archaeology, political science, business, art, biology, theology, computer science, and cultural studies at this institution. It is home to more than 24,000 students as well as 11 teams of faculty members. The university is involved in a substantial number of collaborations on the local, state, and national levels, as well as on the international level. It maintains relationships with numerous educational institutions in thirty different countries. These collaborations make it possible for students and faculty to participate in outstanding study abroad and exchange programs. There are more than 40 different nationalities represented among the students at the university, who make up more than 25 percent of the total student body. In addition to this, the university works hard to make sure that students have access to excellent internship and job opportunities.

The university’s alumni network is quite extensive, and it counts a number of well-known figures among its members. Joseph Goebbels was a German Nazi politician and Hitler’s closest associate during the regime of Adolf Hitler. German philosopher Martin Heidegger was a well-known figure in his field. Edmund Husserl is credited with founding the discipline of phenomenology. The American philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt was a well-known figure in her field. Paul Ehrlich was a distinguished physician, scientist, and winner of the Nobel Prize in medicine. In the field of cellular respiration research, Paul Ehrlich was an innovator and pioneering biologist. Paul Ehrlich was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1978. Ethel Dench Puffer Howes was a prominent figure in the field of psychology and feminist organizing in the United States. Along with a significant number of recipients of the Nobel Prize and the Leibniz Prize, the university is associated with a large number of other illustrious individuals.
