University of Cambridge
The University of Cambridge, founded in 1208, is widely considered to be among the best educational institutions in the world. According to the university’s own website, it is also among the top 10 universities in the United Kingdom for graduate placement. The university researchers, who have gained international renown for their innovations, have formed partnerships with their peers in Africa, the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Many faculty and staff at the prestigious University of Cambridge in London have won Nobel Prizes in recognition of their work in fields as diverse as the discovery of the structure of DNA and the development of national income accounting and the discovery of penicillin.
This prestigious institution, long a pipe dream for many, has moved up to second place in the QS World University Rankings 2021. Academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, citations per faculty, and the percentage of international faculty all played a role in Cambridge University receiving top marks. The fields of anthropology and archaeology within it both achieved first place in their respective global rankings. In addition to its strong reputation for academic excellence, the university’s research impact and global perspective helped it earn fifth place in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2022.
The admissions process at Cambridge University is challenging because each of the university’s 31 colleges has its own policies and procedures. There are a total of six departments or faculties: Arts & Humanities, Biological Sciences, Clinical Medicine, Humanities & Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Technology. Cambridge is well connected to the rest of the United Kingdom and is only 95 kilometers from London. The university provides over 300 graduate-level programs, in addition to 30 undergraduate programs spanning over 65 disciplines. It is also possible to take a few courses online that are relatively brief.
The university’s student body represents more than 143 different countries. In 2021, there will be a total of 20,257 students enrolled at the university, 12,720 of whom will be undergrads and 7,527 of whom will be grad students. The Cambridge-Hamied Visiting Lecture Scheme has enabled scholarly interactions between the University of Cambridge and India.
Most students at Cambridge are guaranteed the same living arrangements in college-owned property for the full duration of their time at the university. Some universities even welcome fourth-year college students. Some of the university colleges even own apartments and houses for their students to live in throughout the city. The students can take advantage of the many sports, music, and health resources available on campus. The cost of attending Cambridge University depends on the major.
There are a number of different types of financial aid available to international students at Cambridge, including awards from the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust as well as college-specific awards. Having an acceptance letter from the university, among other things, is required. In addition, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship offers full funding for exceptionally talented international students who wish to enroll in a postgraduate degree program at Cambridge University.
Six months after graduating, more than 93% of University of Cambridge, London alums were either hired by prestigious companies as graduates or decided to continue their education elsewhere. Stephen Hawking (theoretical physicist), Emma Thompson (British actress), Charles Darwin (renowned biologist), Bertrand Russell (British philosopher), Prince Charles (son of Queen Elizabeth II), and Robert Frost are just a few of the famous people whose names hang on the walls as alumni wall décor (American poet). Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, economist and philosopher Amartya Sen, politician and activist Rajiv Gandhi, poet and author Harivansh Rai Bachchan, businessman Dorabji Tata, and mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan all made significant contributions to their respective fields and to India as a whole.
Admissions
In 1209, some professors left the University of Oxford because they didn’t agree with the public. This was the start of what would become the University of Cambridge. In 1231, King Henry III gave the university its royal charter. This made it the second-oldest in the world. Cambridge University is made up of six schools with 31 semi-independent colleges and more than 100 academic departments. The city is also very proud of the Cambridge University Press, which is the second largest university press in the world and the oldest printing and publishing house in the world. At the University of Cambridge, you can choose from 30 undergraduate courses that cover more than 65 different topics, 198 graduate programs (taught by faculty or with a research option), and almost 300 graduate programs.
In 2017–18, Cambridge University said that 95.2% of its graduates got jobs. Over 70% of graduates found full-time paid jobs, and only 2% found part-time paid jobs as well. Even though Cambridge University had more than 20,000 graduates that year, only about half of them filled out the survey. The average salary was £35,000, and 85% of University of Cambridge Business School graduates got jobs.
Rankings
Every year, the University of Cambridge is ranked as one of the best in the world. In the last five years, the university has always been ranked highly by the Complete University Guide. This guide ranks universities based on a wide range of factors, including entry requirements, student satisfaction, research quality, research intensity, graduate employment prospects, funding for academic services and facilities, the percentage of students who graduate with honors, and graduation rates with high GPAs and high rates of good grades.
Both The Guardian and the ARWU Shanghai Ranking put Cambridge in the top three. When ranking universities, The Guardian looks at things like entry requirements, student-to-faculty ratio, value-added prospects, and career prospects. In 2021, QS World University will rank the university as number seven, and Times Higher Education will rank it as number six. QS gives the most weight to Academic Reputation (40%), followed by Faculty/Student Ratio (20%) and Citations per Faculty (10%), while Times Higher Education (THE) gives equal weight (30%) to Teaching, Research, and Citations.
US News and World Report, a well-known US magazine, has put the UK institution in ninth place. US News & World Report’s rankings are based on a number of things, such as the Global Research Reputation (12.5%), the Regional Research Reputation (12.5%), and the Number of Publications Cited (12.5%).
