Duquesne University, which was founded in 1878 by Spiritans and is now considered one of the most prominent Catholic universities in the United States, was originally a seminary.
The illustrious university, which started out about 140 years ago as Pittsburgh Catholic College, is the one and only Spiritan institute of higher education in the United States. Only forty students and six members of the faculty were enrolled in the first class at Pittsburgh Catholic College when it initially opened its doors.
