In 1883, the University College of South Wales and Monmouth county was created, which later became Cardiff University. When it was started in 1893, it was one of the young colleges at what would become the University of Wales. In 1997, it started giving degrees to the students who had signed up. After it merged with the Welsh Institute of Science and Technology in 1988, it became a part of the well-known University of Wales. When Cardiff University got its official name in 2005, it got the right to give degrees in its own name.
